Can physical therapy heal your knee pain?

What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy, also referred to as PT, is a healthcare specialty that treats injury and disease by restoring bodily movements through tissue manipulation, restoring proper mechanics, and exercise. Clinicians in this profession often hold a masters or a doctoral degree.

A customized physical therapy program can help individuals return to their prior level of function and encourage activities and lifestyle changes that can help prevent further injury in addition to improving overall health and well-being.

How do physical therapists treat patients?

Physical therapists can teach patients how to prevent or manage their conditions so they can achieve long-term health benefits. PTs examine each individual and develop a plan of care, to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent further injury. Many of the techniques PT’s use include restoration and training of the body’s functional movements, including: joints, muscles, and other soft tissue to improve movement and decrease pain.

Does physical therapy work for knee pain?

Knee pain is a very common type of an injury that people of all ages may face at some point. Muscle imbalances can make one more susceptible to knee pain or injuries.

Exercising a hurt knee may seem counterintuitive, but believe it or not, proper exercise can help relieve knee pain. PT is key in strengthening muscles in the body to support the joint.

The knee is a major joint in the body that we use for almost all our daily tasks including: walking, climbing stairs, and rising from a seated position. Pain in the knee can limit these and be very uncomfortable for many. By working with your physical therapist and by keeping the knee joint mobile and strong, problems with knee may be healed, and your function can be restored.

Here at Total Body Physical Therapy, we can heal a variety of injuries including but not limited to: knee sprains/strains, patella femoral syndrome, patellar tendonitis, ITB syndrome, and pes anserine tendonitis, in addition to the total body.
